Canadian Farmers Need More Support: Here’s Why

canadian farmers need more support

It is without question that the agricultural industry in Canada is in desperate need of more workers. Simply put, farming in Canada displays many unattractive qualities that repel the population. Everyone knows that Canada is not the warmest country, and all Canadians are aware of the density in the more southern parts of the nation. This makes it incredibly difficult for the farming industry to thrive, farmers do not have year-round work due to the climate and nobody wants to live in the more isolated parts of Canada (northern, central, and eastern). On top of this, farming on a global scale is becoming more of an unappealing occupation year by year just because the trend for the last 20 years has been about innovation, technology, and other corporate industries. To conclude, it seems like to be a farmer in Canada, you have to sacrifice a lot. One of the biggest being the low pay, there needs to be much more incentive for these workers because the reality remains that Canadians need this industry.

The Band-Aid Solution

Canada is well-known for being one of the most welcoming nations worldwide, meaning the country is proud to be inviting large amounts of immigrants every year. However, since the immigrant story typically involves some hardship many of the labor-oriented jobs that privileged citizens do not want fall onto them. With all of this being said, the farming industry is one that many foreigners fall under. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, in 2018 alone about 55,000 people from different countries were hired temporarily. While this may work for now, there needs to be a long-term sustainable solution to fix this rising problem. However, since there doesn’t seem to be any alternatives, the federal government launched communal bunkhouses. This is where the majority of foreign workers live, they are safe and more appealing to those who come from abroad to work on Canada's farms.

Communal Bunkhouses: What Do They Need?

Just like any other shelter, there is a lot that goes into these bunkhouses to guarantee a smooth and productive operation. One of the main features of these shelters is bunk beds, but due to COVID-19, they are currently illegal, making it a challenge for anyone responsible for a solution. Shelters like these are not practical for normal beds and furniture that you would see at a hotel or even at home. With that said, some of the criteria for the essentials of a shelter include;

  • Easy Assembly
  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Simple/Plain

For a shelter like this one, if products follow this criterion it can be very advantageous as maintenance will never be a large issue. Another really helpful feature for maintenance is having products that are less susceptible to things like water damage, bugs, and rust. Having these features helps a lot with cost as well because the lifespan of these products is noticeably longer.

Omland’s Contribution

Here at Omland, we have been supplying farms like these all across Canada for many years. As previously mentioned, bunk beds are currently not allowed in such shelters. Omland carries a military-grade platform bed that can be converted into a bunk bed in the future with the help of an adaptor. Ladders and guardrails are also available when things start to clear up pandemic-wise. These bunk beds have a weight capacity of over 400 lbs. It takes less than 2 minutes to assemble, they are rust-proof and built to last. At these farms, they need a lot more than just a place to sleep. Omland can provide a great variety of many of the essential items for these shelters, some include;

  • Bed bug-proof, waterproof and easy-to-clean mattresses (EZ Care)
  • Solid color, high-quality linen
  • Solid color, high-quality towels

Conclusion

Although Canada is all too reliant on the temporary work that foreigners provide, the concept of communal bunkhouses can prove effective long-term. Canadians rightfully pride themselves on living in an accepting and welcoming nation. Canada is a place where immigrants and foreigners can come to start a new lifestyle and even fulfill their lifelong dreams. It isn’t likely that Canada will ever see a shortage in the number of people who would love to become a valued member of our community especially due to how much space Canada has and how few people there are. Omland has been a part of this movement for many years and we are actively trying to support the agricultural industry by providing practical products that make their lives much easier.
